I Drank 4 Sleep Cocoas for 30 Nights Each—Here’s What My WHOOP Data Showed
I have never been great at switching off at night. My body can be exhausted while my brain decides that 11:47 p.m. is the perfect time to replay an old conversation, make tomorrow’s to-do list, and reorganize the kitchen.
For a while, I tried different melatonin gummies, tablets, and drink mixes. Some helped me fall asleep, but I hated the trade-off: vivid dreams, the occasional morning headache, and that heavy feeling where I had technically slept but my brain had not clocked back in. When I used melatonin regularly, it also started to feel less noticeable and more like something I reached for automatically.
Melatonin is not generally considered addictive when used as directed, but strange dreams, headaches, and daytime sleepiness are recognized side effects. Higher doses can make those problems worse, and it can interact with medications. I wanted something melatonin-free that helped me wind down without making tomorrow feel like the price of sleeping tonight.
That led me to sleep cocoa. I know, it sounds like the wellness industry found another way to sell us an expensive bag of powder, right? But a warm drink already feels like a natural end-of-day ritual, so I decided to test the four brands I kept seeing online. One quick note for context: I work with the HabitONE team, so I already knew the brand before starting this test. I still followed the same 30-night routine for every product and included my WHOOP screenshots below. These are my personal results, not a clinical conclusion or a promise that everyone will respond the same way.
I drank each one for 30 nights and tracked Sleep Performance, total sleep, wake events, and Recovery with my WHOOP. I also rated taste, texture, morning clarity, and whether I actually wanted to make it every night.
Here are my top four sleep cocoas:
#1 HabitONE Magnesium Cocoa
Pros:
- It does not contain melatonin, and I woke up without the foggy, headache-heavy feeling I had experienced with some melatonin products.
- It replaced my late-night snack. Instead of wandering into the kitchen looking for something sweet, I made one cup and felt like the treat part of my evening was handled.
- It helped me move from work mode to sleep mode without feeling knocked out or drugged.
- Easy to mix with a frother. I start with a little warm milk, make a smooth paste, and then add the rest.
- The one-time purchase option is easy to see, which should be normal but definitely is not in this category.
- The single-serving sachets are perfect for travel. I take them on train trips and use them to recreate the same bedtime cue when I cross time zones. They do not cure jet lag, but I find it easier to settle into local bedtime and recover.
Cons:
- There are no flavor variations to choose from. It only comes in one cocoa flavor.
- It is only sold directly online, so you cannot casually pick it up at most grocery stores.
Taste: 9/10
Mixability and texture: 8/10
#2 SWITCH Killswitch
Pros:
- One of the most noticeable formulas for getting sleepy. On its good nights, I felt ready for bed faster than I did with MoonBrew or BEAM.
- It is melatonin-free.
- Some reviewers reported better deep sleep, fewer wake-ups, and a clear morning once they found the right serving size.
Cons:
- The effect felt aggressive and unpredictable. In its low-rated Amazon reviews, 40.3% noticed no real effect and 17.7% said their sleep actually became worse.
- The bad experiences were not subtle: feeling wide awake, headaches, strange dreams, sleep paralysis, and a drugged or hungover morning.
- It tastes more like a functional supplement than hot chocolate and needs warm milk to become enjoyable.
- Some customers reported automatic repeat shipments and cancellation problems. One said it took three requests to cancel.
Taste: 6/10
Mixability and texture: 5/10
#3 BEAM Dream
Pros:
- Brownie Batter was one of the better-tasting flavors. It feels like a real sweet treat.
- Customers repeatedly describe drinking it instead of snacking or to satisfy a sweet tooth before bed.
- Some reviewers got the ideal result: falling asleep faster, staying asleep, and waking up clear-headed.
Cons:
- It contains melatonin, which was the exact thing I wanted to avoid.
- Half of its low-rated Amazon reviewers reported no noticeable effect, while 39.3% complained about the price or value.
- The bag says 30 servings, but buyers reported getting roughly 16 to 23. That makes the real nightly price much higher than it looks.
- The subscription setup made me uncomfortable. One customer saw no plan under “Subscriptions,” but found an active one through a separate “Manage subscriptions” link.
- Some customers could not return an opened product. That is a big risk for something so expensive and personal.
Taste: 7/10
Mixability and texture: 6/10
#4 MoonBrew
Pros:
- The chocolate flavor can be genuinely enjoyable and feels more like a nighttime treat than a pill in disguise.
- It is melatonin-free.
- Some buyers praise it for helping them stay asleep and wake up without grogginess.
Cons:
- It was too sweet for me. Reviewers also describe a fake-sugar, chemical, metallic, or herbal aftertaste.
- Long-time customers say the changed formula is sweeter, needs a larger scoop, and no longer feels like the product they originally subscribed to.
- The fulfillment story is the worst here. In the low-rated Trustpilot reviews I analyzed, 65.9% mentioned shipping delays, 39.1% said the order never arrived, and 21% said they were charged without receiving the product.
- Customers described running out while recurring charges continued. Meanwhile, the brand kept advertising discounts to new buyers. That would drive me crazy.
Taste: 6/10
Mixability and texture: 6/10
What My WHOOP Data Showed
My melatonin baseline averaged 71% Sleep Performance. BEAM moved that to 76%, MoonBrew averaged 73%, SWITCH reached 79%, and HabitONE finished highest at 86%. That put HabitONE 15 percentage points above my baseline and 7 points ahead of the next-best result.
*These are my personal monthly averages, not a controlled clinical comparison. Sleep can also change with stress, travel, training, meals, and routine.
The Final Verdict
HabitONE by a landslide! It tasted the best with milk, replaced my late-night sweet snack, and helped me wind down without melatonin or a rough morning. It was also the only one I genuinely wanted to keep drinking after the experiment ended.
The sachets sealed it for me. I keep them in my travel bag, take them on train trips, and use them to recreate my evening routine when jet lag throws everything off.
*This is one person’s experience, not medical advice. WHOOP is a consumer wearable, not a clinical sleep study. Talk with a clinician or pharmacist about melatonin or other sleep supplements if you take medication or have persistent sleep problems.

Newest FirstI used to buy MoonBrew directly, but the new recipe and sweetener are much less palatable. I will not be purchasing it again.
HabitONE was the one I kept reaching for after the test. With hot milk, it tasted like an actual nighttime cocoa and replaced my usual late-night sweet snack.
The single-serving sachets ended up being one of my favorite details. They made it easy to keep the same evening routine on trains and while traveling.
