Best Protein Coffees: Ranked by Taste

Five mushroom coffee brands lined up for a taste test — Four Sigmatic, Everyday Dose, Habitone, MUD\WTR and Ryze

As a die-hard coffee drinker, I had fallen into the habit of treating coffee like breakfast. It felt like an easy way to keep my mornings simple, but by late morning, I was usually hungry, thinking about snacks, and already falling behind on my daily protein goal. I wanted to be more consistent with my nutrition goals, but preparing a full breakfast every morning just wasn’t realistic for me.

That led me to search for a morning coffee that could still give me the energy and taste I loved while making my breakfast routine feel a little more substantial. I wanted something high in protein, low in sugar and calories, and satisfying enough to help me make it to lunch without constantly thinking about food.

After a ton of research, I homed in on protein coffee. I know, it sounds like another chalky protein shake pretending to be coffee, right? But after seeing how many people were using it to hit their protein goals, manage morning hunger, and replace sugary coffee-shop drinks, I decided I had to try it.

I tested all the best protein coffee brands according to the internet, drinking each one consistently and comparing everything from taste and texture to protein content, calories, ingredients, and how satisfied I felt afterward.

Here are my top 6 protein coffees on the market:

#1 Habitone

1. Habitone Protein Coffee

Habitone Protein Coffee pouch

Pros:

  • The taste was a 10/10 for me, my favorite by far. The Original flavor tastes like real coffee to me, with no strong “gym protein” taste or weird sweetener aftertaste. The other flavors are good as well, and French Vanilla is my favorite!
  • Does not contain sugar or artificial sweeteners, unlike others, which is important to me.
  • Easy to mix. For me, a frother is enough to get a good consistency, and there are almost no clumps. If you want to make it perfect, you can mix it with a blender.
  • Works both hot and cold. If I want a hot latte, I just start by adding warm water and mixing it. Once everything is dissolved, I add hot water, and it works perfectly.
  • Even though it’s not a complete meal replacement, I still feel full for a couple of hours after drinking it. It works almost as well as a complete breakfast.
  • It’s available as instant coffee.
  • Offers a one-time purchase option.
  • Offers a money-back guarantee.
  • They now have a collagen creamer that pairs great with protein coffee.

Cons:

  • Not available on Amazon or in any retail stores, though I found their site really easy to order from.
  • Their flavors sell out quickly, so sometimes I can’t get my hands on French Vanilla.

#2 Chike

Chike High Protein Iced Coffee pouch

Pros:

  • Decent taste and goes down easily, but my only issue is that it tastes like a flavored protein shake, not like coffee with some syrup added.
  • A lot of flavors to choose from, ranging from mocha to caramel.
  • 20g of protein per serving, which is great, but it barely offers anything beyond protein and flavor.

Cons:

  • Weak and muted coffee taste because of the high protein content. It has more of a milky, sweet flavor.
  • I followed the serving instructions, but it came out very thick and clumpy when mixed with a frother. A blender is the only option here.
  • They use sucralose as their main sweetener, which is a big red flag for me.
  • Expensive at $3.57 per serving, or $2.93 if you subscribe.

Taste: 7/10

Mixability and texture: 6/10

#3 Ascent

Ascent Protein Coffee bag

Pros:

  • Again, 20g of protein, which is great, but the taste is not really about coffee. The only thing I taste is generic protein with subtle coffee notes.
  • They have a whole sports nutrition lineup. If you’re into sports, it’s easy to stick with one brand.
  • 100mg of caffeine, which is my sweet spot for a steady energy boost.

Cons:

  • Their main sweetener is stevia, and it can mess with your gut, so if you have a sensitive gut, be careful!
  • I tried to froth it up, but it just foamed instead of mixing evenly. I also felt a lot of grainy bits in my mouth. Yuck.
  • After it sits for a while, the protein settles into sludge at the bottom of the glass, and the taste changes. It feels like I’m drinking pure syrup. That’s it.

#4 FlavCity

FlavCity Protein Coffee bag

Pros:

  • An ingredient list that can cover all your needs: protein, collagen, and mushrooms.
  • Clean label with grass-fed whey, organic ingredients, and no artificial sweeteners.
  • The most filling of all the options on the market, but I just can’t call it coffee.

Cons:

  • It’s really expensive at $2.99 per cup for a one-time purchase and $2.55 if you subscribe.
  • Almost no caffeine at just 55mg, so it feels more like a meal replacement than the morning coffee you crave.
  • While the ingredient list is strong, the taste is something I don’t like here. They added mushrooms, so what I taste is a milkshake with an earthy aftertaste.
  • While it mixes well with a frother, there’s always mushroom sludge at the bottom.

Taste: 6/10

Mixability and texture: 4/10

#5 Everyday Dose

Everyday Dose Coffee+ pouch

Pros:

  • A good balance between coffee and protein, which makes it so creamy!
  • Mixes easily without a frother, with no clumps left in the mug.
  • Lots of goodies, including a free shaker and spoon.

Cons:

  • The dosing is wildly off. I went through my 20-serving bag in about 10 days because they recommend two servings for just 4 to 8 oz of milk. This is a very heavy ratio compared to the others. When I looked up customer reviews, I found that this was a very common complaint. It basically makes the coffee twice as expensive as advertised.
  • They’re very sneaky with their subscription model. It’s not at all obvious that you’ll be billed again every 30 days. I prefer a clear opt-in for subscriptions, and judging by the negative reviews, so do their customers.
  • It has 7g of sugar, which is too much for me.

Mixability and texture: 6/10

#6 Javvy

Javvy Protein Coffee pouch

Pros:

  • 18 flavors to choose from, so there’s something for everyone.
  • Great price at $1.75 per serving.
  • Added probiotics and MCTs for gut health.

Cons:

  • All their sweeteners are natural, but since they use several of them, some flavors have too much of a chemical taste for my liking. Generally, the taste is not that bad, but it felt too sweet. I think they overdid it with the sweeteners.
  • It does not mix well. Even with a blender, some powder sticks to the cup, and the overall consistency is clumpy. I tried the Hazelnut and Vanilla flavors.
  • They hook you into a subscription. I thought I had placed a one-time order, but 30 days later, I was charged again. I was surprised, to say the least. Canceling was a bit of a hassle because there is no phone support, only email.

Taste: 5/10

Mixability and texture: 3/10

The Final Verdict

Habitone by a landslide! I even did a blind taste test between my top 3 with my sister (a former Starbucks barista) and my husband (a self-proclaimed coffee snob who also tracks his macros religiously) and Habitone was their #1 choice as well.

I was a Chike girl for over a year but that sucralose aftertaste finally got to me. Tried Habitone on a whim and it's the first one that actually tastes like coffee and not a sweetened protein shake. Didn't realize how much the fake sweetness was bugging me until it was gone. Not going back.
